ASSESSMENT: DEVELOPING AN E-PORTFOLIO

OVERVIEW

Throughout this course, you will be working towards creating your own e-portfolio (blog) of teaching resources. The resources in the portfolio will reflect the technologies that you are introduced to during this course.  Additionally, you will develop the resources specifically for your preferred teaching setting.  By the end of the course you will have a selection of computer assisted language learning resources that you can apply in a practical way in your teaching setting.

PART A: DETERMINE YOUR PREFERED TEACHING SETTING

Within the second week of the course you will be asked to describe what you consider to be your preferred EFL teaching setting.  Whatever setting you choose will provide a focus for your e-portfolio.  You may or may not already be teaching in an EFL setting. If you are, you may wish to use your current teaching setting as your focus.  Either way, you will need to think about such things as:

  • How old are your learners?
  • How many learners you teach in one class?
  • How often do you teach them?
  • What specific subjects do you teach?
  • What resources are you are required to teach with? and What resources would you prefer to teach with?
  • What is the social, cultural, and ethnic background of your learners?
  • What is the environment outside the classroom like that may affect your teaching? For example, administrative decisions, the role of parents, and the support of faculty.

You will be required to write a detailed statement describing your preferred teaching setting.  The statement should be between 200-300 words.

The statement will serve as an introduction to your e-portfolio.  It will be presented on a page of your e-portfolio, before the end of the second week of the course.

A suggested opening statement is:  I have developed this e-portfolio specifically to meet the needs of my EFL learners within my teaching setting. I teach in / I hope to teach in…

As your knowledge of TESOL develops throughout this course, you are welcome to change this statement to match your developing understandings.

You will continually review the statement as you develop each of the resources in your e-portfolio.

PART B: DEVELOPING YOUR E-PORTFOLIO

You will be required to develop at least one resource during each module in the course.  This means you will have at least five completed resources in your e-portfolio by week 16 of the course.

All resources within your e-portfolio must support EFL learning within your preferred teaching setting (defined in Part One).

Depending on your level of computer proficiency, you will be required to spend at least three hours per week outside of class to become competent at using the technologies presented to you in class sessions and to complete each resource to an acceptable standard.

All resources within your e-portfolio must be developed by you.  In addition to your work, you can include resources by other learners, if the resource is relevant to your preferred teaching setting and you have permission from the author.  Ensure that you give recognition to the author towards any additional resources.
